Big Little Campers vs Travellers Autobarn

Both run Auckland and Christchurch, and neither has a Queenstown depot. Both sell unlimited kilometres, and both set a long minimum: seven days on every Big Little model, five days on a Travellers Autobarn same-city return, and 10 to 35 days on any one-way. Neither contract clears you for unsealed roads, and the two exclusion lists overlap — but only Travellers Autobarn’s names Crown Range Road, the sealed state highway between Wanaka and Queenstown. What arrives with the van is where they part. Big Little includes bedding, towels and cooking equipment on every hire. Travellers Autobarn’s equivalent is a living-equipment charge that is mandatory rather than optional, and neither the Station Wagon nor the Chubby Camper has a built-in cooker — the Chubby cooks on a portable gas cooker.

The separation that matters is legal, not physical. Big Little lists all three of its models with a green warrant and a built-in fixed toilet. Travellers Autobarn lists the Chubby, HiTop, Kuga and Hi5 as self-contained, but its own terms, effective 19 June 2026, tie the certificate on ‘certain campervans’ to a NZ$50 portable toilet issued at pick-up. The Department of Conservation requires a toilet fixed to the floor, and no warrant number or issue date is published. That is not a quality difference. It is a question of where you may legally sleep, and freedom camping without a displayed card carries a NZ$400 infringement fee. The cost of that certainty is range: Big Little runs three models, and none of them sleeps more than three.

Heating splits the two fleets more sharply than size does. No Travellers Autobarn model has a built-in heater of any kind. For pick-ups between May and September the company supplies a free winter pack, and states that its electric heater works only at a powered campsite. Big Little fits a plug-in 240-volt heater to The Little One and The Big One, which carries the same restriction, and an interior diesel heater to The Biggest One. That Ducato is the only vehicle across either fleet that heats away from mains power. On a South Island route outside high summer, that is the specification the trip turns on.
