Mighty: An Honest Review for Renters

Damage liability under the standard 'Low Road' cover is NZ$3,500 on MightyLITE and on Mighty vans without a shower, and NZ$5,000 on the toilet-and-shower models, per claim rather than per rental and whether or not you hold travel insurance. No deposit is debited in New Zealand; a card authority for that amount is recorded at pickup.

Reducing it to zero costs NZ$40 per day on MightyLITE, NZ$50 on Mighty vans without a shower and NZ$55 with. Over a fortnight that upgrade can exceed the gap between Mighty and a newer-fleet competitor, so price the whole package rather than the daily rate.

The HiLITE, DeLITE, Highball and Double Down carry a 12-litre hideaway cassette toilet and cold running water only. There is no shower and no hot water, so washing means campground facilities every day of the trip.

They also have no living-area heater — only the driver's cab heating, which works while the engine runs and not otherwise. For a winter or shoulder-season South Island route that is the single most important line on this page.

No Mighty or MightyLITE vehicle is cleared for unsealed roads, beyond well-maintained access roads under 12 kilometres in length leading to a commercial campground or a major tourist attraction. Driving anywhere else on gravel can void the damage cover entirely.

The named exclusions catch routes travellers actually plan. Skippers Road, Ninety Mile Beach, Ball Hut Road and the Mount Aspiring Road past Treble Cone are all off limits, as are ski field access roads between 1 June and 31 October.

A minimum five-day rental applies even when you collect and return at the same branch, and a one-way trip carries the same floor plus a fee of NZ$100 to NZ$300 depending on direction and season.

Rental days are counted per calendar day, so both the pickup day and the return day are billed. A Monday-to-Friday trip is five days, not four, which is worth checking against a quote before comparing it with another operator.

Google's 4.3 is genuinely New Zealand-specific: every one of the 1,361 reviews sits on an Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown listing at the same street addresses thl's own branch data gives for those depots.

Trustpilot's 3.9 is not. Its thirteen locations span both countries, and Perth alone carries more reviews than Queenstown. Where the two disagree, the Google figure is the one describing the depots you would actually collect from.

The spread across the three branches is 0.2 stars, from Christchurch at 4.2 to Queenstown at 4.4. Weighting by review count barely moves the result, which lands at 4.27 against a straight average of 4.30.

That consistency is worth something on a shared-depot brand. It suggests the handover experience does not depend much on which branch you pick, which is not true of every multi-depot operator in this market.
