Wendekreisen: An Honest Review for Renters

The current online terms make standard camper insurance compulsory at NZ$25 a day. Its excess is NZ$2,500 for drivers aged 25 and over and NZ$5,000 for ages 21 to 24, and the FAQ now gives the same figures. The bond equals that excess, taken as a credit card imprint and not charged if the conditions are met.

Standard cover with tyre and windscreen protection costs NZ$35 a day in total, keeping the same excess but taking it to nil for windscreen and tyre damage. Full Cover, at NZ$45, cuts the excess to NZ$250 and NZ$2,500 but never to zero. All three are capped at 50 days: NZ$1,250, NZ$1,750 or NZ$2,250 per hire.

Wendekreisen uses a named blacklist rather than a blanket ban on unsealed roads. Prohibited routes include Ninety Mile Beach, Skippers Road, Tasman Valley Road where unsealed, and Mount Aspiring Road beyond Treble Cone. All other public roads are permitted.

That permission is narrower than it first sounds. The terms make the renter liable without monetary limit for loss caused on a prohibited route, as well as recovery after bogging or abandonment, so match every planned gravel section against the list before collection.

The company publishes all 11 current categories as certified self-contained, and the detailed pages show fixed cassette toilets. Since 7 June 2026, New Zealand recognises only green-warrant vehicles for freedom camping; the required toilet must be permanently fixed and usable inside.

Check the green warrant on the specific vehicle at handover, because certification belongs to the vehicle rather than the brand. The Budget models use LPG heating and manual gearboxes; Koru and Koru Star move through diesel heat, manuals and automatics.

Auckland and Christchurch are the normal depots. Published hours are 08:30–17:00 Monday to Saturday and 08:30–13:00 on Sundays and public holidays; outside-hours movements need seven days' notice, are limited to 06:30–20:00, and cost NZ$60 each.

Airport transfers and one-way hire between those depots are included. Another-city collection or return needs prior arrangement, availability and a NZ$550 relocation surcharge. A non-refundable NZ$300 deposit anchors the cancellation schedule, which reaches 100 per cent inside seven days.

The Google depot figures agree closely. Public topic labels emphasise friendly staff and value in Auckland, and helpful staff, diesel heating and airport transfer in Christchurch. That makes the aggregate useful for the ordinary handover and return experience across both depots.

Among the first ten lowest-rated Christchurch entries read, seven described a mechanical fault or unavailable vehicle, but six were at least two years old. Two recent winter entries appear to concern the same hire, so this is a worst-case support signal, not a failure rate.

All 19 Trustpilot entries surfaced from the previous 12 months were read. Seventeen were positive about staff, communication or service; three described an appliance or starting-battery fault, and two of those criticised the time spent troubleshooting remotely or waiting.

Google is the stronger measure of the typical depot experience; Trustpilot is more useful for what happens when a vehicle develops a fault after departure. Test the heater, fridge and electrics before leaving, and ask when the workshop replaces rather than troubleshoots a vehicle.
