Waka Campa vs Maui

Both operators run Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, with an airport shuttle at each. Waka Campa lists every model as certified self-contained, and thl’s booking system marks every Maui category the same way; the green warrant belongs to the vehicle, so check the card at handover. Neither is cleared for ordinary gravel touring. Their named prohibitions overlap on Skippers Road, Ninety Mile Beach and part of the Wanaka to Mount Aspiring road. One road separates them: Maui bans Crown Range Road, the direct Queenstown to Wanaka route, and it does not appear on Waka Campa’s list of five.

What separates them is what the van does once parked. Waka Campa rents four models. Three are one Toyota HiAce design in three age tiers, seating six and sleeping four, each with a two-burner gas hob, a fridge-freezer, a 150-watt solar panel and a fixed toilet; their heater is electric, the company’s own FAQ confirms it needs a 230-volt connection rather than the house battery, and their only shower is an outdoor tap and a solar bag. The fourth, the newer Outrider, seats and sleeps three and adds a diesel heater and an indoor cold shower. Maui lists diesel living-area heating, an internal hot shower and a flush toilet on all five of its automatic categories. Diesel heat runs without a hookup. The trade is specificity: Maui says a standard vehicle leaves the fleet inside two and a half years, but a booking secures a category rather than a make, model or layout. Waka Campa reverses both halves — it tells you which of its models arrives, and the HiAce tiers run from a 2025–2026 chassis down to a 2013–2015 one.

On a high-summer itinerary the gap costs you an outdoor rinse and the odd cold evening. Outside high summer it inverts the certification on the three Explorers: the freedom-camping night their certification unlocks is the night their heater has no power to run on, and only the Outrider, with its diesel heater, avoids that. A cold-weather trip therefore drifts back onto powered sites and their fees, so compare these two as a total trip cost rather than as a daily rate. Maui’s costs arrive at the counter instead. Low Road records a card authority for NZ$7,500 at collection, where Waka Campa freezes NZ$4,500 as both bond and excess. A Queenstown pickup adds a location fee of NZ$270 through 31 March 2027 and NZ$280 from 1 April 2027.
