Hiring a campervan in Brisbane

Brisbane is a corridor city for campervan travellers rather than a destination one. Almost everyone collecting a van here is heading somewhere: north up the Bruce Highway toward the reef, or south down the Pacific Highway to Byron and beyond. That shapes everything about the market — the depots sit near the airport rather than the city, one-way terms matter more here than in most Australian cities, and the fleet leans hard toward two people and a sealed road.

The depot row is genuinely deep, which is unusual and useful, and what comes back in live prices for Brisbane pickups is overwhelmingly two-wheel-drive and automatic — a fair reflection of where people actually drive from here. The four-wheel-drive end is thin because the standard trips out of Brisbane are sealed the whole way; the exceptions are the sand islands, and those are a different problem entirely.

Two caveats before you read the table. Apollo prices Brisbane pickups and appears in the comparison, but no depot address, hours or transfer detail is confirmed against its own website, so the row is left out rather than published unverified. In the other direction, Camperman and Campervan Village both run Brisbane depots but do not come back in our live price checks for this city, so they appear in the depot table and not in the prices.

Watch out: Every depot in Brisbane closes mid-afternoon and none runs an airport shuttle, so an evening arrival at BNE means a hotel night before you can collect — Spaceships' contactless Eagle Farm depot is the only one that will hand over a van outside staffed hours.

Where the depots are, and getting there from BNE

The pattern here is simpler than in Sydney or Melbourne: eight of the nine depots sit within a few kilometres of each other in the Eagle Farm–Northgate–Hendra–Virginia industrial belt, four to fifteen kilometres north of the airport and roughly ten to twenty minutes by road. Campervan Village is the outlier at Woolloongabba, on the south side of the river and further out, with no distance figure published. No company here runs an airport shuttle — JUCY's own help centre says so explicitly for the whole of Australia — so a taxi or rideshare is the default for everyone, and Spaceships is the only depot that hands a van over outside staffed hours. Britz, Maui and Mighty share the Northgate site as thl brands, which makes the right building and the wrong counter a real possibility, and Cruisin Motorhomes sits in the same Virginia pocket as Camperman. Three rows carry hedges: Maui's Brisbane depot detail is not confirmed against its own help page, Camperman publishes no Brisbane-specific opening hours at all, and Mighty's own branch page and thl's rental-conditions table state different opening times for the one Northgate yard.

Driver age, licence and who will rent to you

Three different age regimes operate out of the same few streets here, and which one applies is a function of which company you book rather than which van you take. Two of the thl brands, Britz and Maui, hold a flat minimum of 21 across their whole fleets with no young-driver tier above it, and Cruisin Motorhomes matches the 21 floor while publishing a ceiling of 79 alongside it. Their budget stablemate Mighty is the exception inside that group: it opens at 18, but only on a named handful of models, with everything else — the 4WD included — back at 21. Travellers Autobarn, Spaceships and Camperman all take drivers from 18 with no age-based surcharge at all. JUCY and Campervan Village also start at 18 but apply a surcharge to the under-21 band, and Campervan Village additionally shuts 18-to-20-year-olds out of its four-wheel-drives entirely. The thing travellers least expect is an upper bound: six of these eleven companies publish a maximum driver age, and the figures are not the same. Licences are more consistent — a learner's permit is refused everywhere, JUCY refuses a P1 provisional, and a licence not written in English needs either an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation carried alongside the original.

The sharpest thing on Brisbane's curve is also the easiest to misread. December is the softest month here and January the dearest, and they sit next to each other. Our price checks sample a departure in the middle of each month, so the December reading lands before the Christmas rush starts and the January reading lands inside it — the real line runs through roughly the twentieth of December, when the Queensland school holidays begin. A mid-December pickup and a Boxing Day pickup are not the same booking, and a twelve-month curve cannot show you that.

The second driver is the wet. South-east Queensland's storm and rain season runs roughly November to March and peaks from January to March, but for a Brisbane hire the weather itself is rarely the deciding factor — the road north is. The Bruce Highway above Rockhampton can close for days after a tropical low, and on a Brisbane-to-Cairns itinerary that is a scheduling problem rather than a comfort one. Winter, roughly May to September, is Brisbane's dry, mild, entirely reliable half of the year, which is why the depot row here stays busy through months that would be dead in Melbourne.

On the sell-out strip: our checks did not find a month where Brisbane stock had already gone, which is what you would expect from a row this deep. Read that as availability, not as permission to leave it late — with a row this deep, scarcity shows up as your choice narrowing to whatever is left rather than as an empty page. The dates that genuinely tighten are event-driven and local. The Ekka in August brings its own Brisbane-only public holiday, the Woodford Folk Festival runs between Christmas and New Year about an hour north-west and is a camping festival in its own right, and Easter puts the northern-NSW festival crowd and the Queensland school holidays into the same fortnight. If you are collecting in one of those windows, book the van before you book anything else.

One-way drop-offs from Brisbane

Brisbane sits in the middle of the east-coast corridor, which makes it both a common place to start a one-way and a common place to end one. Every company with a depot here will take the van back at another of its own branches, but the conditions differ in kind rather than degree, and that is what catches people out. Britz and Maui charge a one-way fee and set a minimum booking length that varies by origin-and-destination pair. Travellers Autobarn holds a longer minimum rental period for one-ways than for a same-city return — anywhere from 10 to 35 days depending on the route — while exempting East Coast one-ways longer than 28 days from the fee itself. Camperman requires written approval from its Cairns reservations team, assesses each request case by case, and confines its discounted relocation product to travel between Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Campervan Village needs prior written approval too and can refuse. Cruisin Motorhomes swaps its five-day floor for published route minimums on a one-way — ten days to Sydney or Melbourne, fourteen to Cairns, twenty-one to Perth — with a one-way fee on top. Spaceships is the odd one out: its own support FAQ says one-way pickup and drop-off carries no fee, while its formal terms describe an authorised change of return location that requires approval and attracts a charge — two first-party pages that contradict each other, so confirm it at booking rather than assuming either way.

Where to drive from Brisbane

Trips out of Brisbane come in two clean shapes with very little in between. There are the short sealed loops — Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron — where the furthest point is under three hours away and you could abandon the plan and be home by evening. Then there are the two long corridor runs, north to Cairns and south to Sydney, measured in weeks and almost always ending with the van in another city. The short loops are why the small end of the fleet turns over so fast here; the long runs are why one-way terms are the thing to read before you book.

Brisbane to the Gold Coast and the hinterland

South through Tamborine Mountain and Canungra into the Lamington and Springbrook national parks, then down onto the Gold Coast beaches before turning for home. Sealed the whole way and never more than half a day from the depot, which makes it the standard first outing for anyone who has not driven a van on the left before.

Where you can legally sleep around Brisbane

Sleeping or camping overnight in a vehicle on a road or road-related area — which includes footpaths, dividing strips and road shoulders — is an offence anywhere in the Brisbane City Council area under the council's Health, Safety and Amenity Local Law 2021, enforced by council-officer patrols and fines. The council's own stated exceptions are managing fatigue, personal safety, an emergency, a signed or designated area, or licensed tourism accommodation such as a caravan park or camping ground; none of those amounts to a general permission to camp in the street. Immediately north of the city, the City of Moreton Bay has its own Camping on Public Land Local Law 2023, which likewise treats staying overnight in a vehicle on public land as camping and regulates it — but the exact permit and prohibition mechanics there are not confirmed against the council's own law page or its explanatory notes. Treat this as the conservative, confirmable picture rather than a full legal map: Queensland has no right to roam, and the rules change at every council boundary you cross.

First night out of Brisbane

Plan on a licensed holiday or caravan park for night one, and book it before you collect the van. Every depot here closes mid-afternoon, so most first nights get spent within an hour of the city rather than out on the road, and there is no legal street option inside Brisbane City Council's area. Queensland's roughly 450 signed highway rest areas permit a lawful stop of up to 20 hours under the state government's own published rules, but that same page is explicit that they are fatigue stops rather than campgrounds, and they sit out on the highways rather than near the city. The free camps named in various rental-company travel blogs south and north-west of Brisbane are not verified against their own councils' by-laws, so they are not listed here as confirmed-legal.

Things to know in Brisbane

Getting out of the airport

Brisbane's international and domestic terminals are separate buildings linked by a free Airtrain shuttle that takes about two minutes. If you land internationally and your depot instructions reference the domestic side, allow for that connection before you start looking for a taxi.

No company on this page runs an airport shuttle — JUCY's own help centre states plainly that it offers none anywhere in Australia, and Britz's branch page says airport and city transfers are not available. A taxi or rideshare is the default for every depot, and it is a short one: the northern cluster is four to fifteen kilometres out, roughly ten to twenty minutes by road. Campervan Village at Woolloongabba is the exception, sitting south of the river with no published distance or transfer guidance at all.

Because the depots close mid-afternoon and only Spaceships hands vans over unattended, the collection window is the real constraint on your first day, not the transfer. If your flight lands after lunch, assume you are collecting the following morning and book a bed accordingly.

Tolls and the first hour of driving

Queensland tolling is entirely cashless and tag-based. There are no booths, no coin baskets and no way to pay at the roadside, and the roads out of the airport toward the Gold Coast or up to the Bruce Highway typically cross at least one tolled motorway — the Gateway Motorway and its bridge, or the AirportlinkM7 tunnel into the inner north.

Ask at the counter how the company handles tolls before you drive off. Some fit a tag and rebill you afterwards; some expect you to open your own account. Either way an unpaid Queensland toll does not quietly disappear — it resurfaces as an administration charge on your card weeks after you have flown home.

Australia drives on the left, and in Brisbane that bites at one specific moment: pulling a large unfamiliar van out of a quiet industrial side street onto Nudgee Road or Kingsford Smith Drive, where the traffic is faster and less forgiving. Sit in the driver's seat for a minute before you move, and take the first few turns slowly.

Sand islands and unsealed roads

The two obvious island trips from Brisbane are the two a hire campervan generally cannot do. K'gari (Fraser Island) and Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) are barge access only, sand tracks throughout, and both require a Queensland vehicle access permit as well as a genuinely sand-capable high-clearance four-wheel-drive.

Only three of the companies pricing Brisbane field four-wheel-drives at all, and being a 4WD is not the same as being cleared for sand under the rental agreement — those are separate questions and the second one is contractual. Check the specific vehicle's terms before building a trip around it; the fleet listings on this page flag which vans are cleared for unsealed roads.

North Stradbroke (Minjerribah) is the workable one. A vehicle ferry runs from Cleveland and the road through to Point Lookout is sealed, so a standard two-wheel-drive camper manages it without special permission. Everything else on the usual Brisbane itineraries — the Gold Coast hinterland, the Sunshine Coast, Byron, the Bruce Highway — is sealed the whole way.

Two clocks, two hours south

Queensland does not observe daylight saving and New South Wales does. From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, the NSW side of the border runs an hour ahead of Brisbane.

Crossing south of the Gold Coast therefore costs you an hour of the working day: a Byron campground office that closes at five has already closed at four by Brisbane's reckoning, and you get the hour back coming north. Phones update themselves and people do not, so the mistake usually shows up as arriving somewhere just after it shut.

It matters on the return too. Every depot here quotes its closing time in Queensland time, and those closing times are mid-afternoon. If you are driving back up from northern NSW on the final morning, work the deadline in Brisbane time and bank the extra hour rather than spending it.

Can I drive a Brisbane hire camper into New South Wales?

Yes. Interstate driving between Queensland, NSW and Victoria is routine, and none of the companies' terms read for this page restricts simply crossing a border — the Brisbane-to-Byron and Brisbane-to-Sydney runs are among the most common trips booked here. What is a separate question is where the van ends up: returning it in another state is a one-way arrangement with its own approval, fee and minimum-hire conditions, and those vary by company. Two practical differences once you are over the border: from October to April NSW runs an hour ahead of Queensland, and NSW council rules on sleeping in a vehicle are their own, distinct from Brisbane's.

Are hire campervans allowed on unsealed roads around Brisbane?

Mostly not. What does a wet-season booking out of Brisbane actually look like?

Brisbane itself keeps functioning through the November-to-March storm season — depots stay open, the coastal loops north and south stay drivable, and the rain tends to arrive as afternoon storms rather than as continuous weather. The exposure is northbound. The Bruce Highway above Rockhampton can close for days after a tropical low, which turns a Brisbane-to-Cairns itinerary into a scheduling problem rather than a weather one, so either build slack into the plan or push the long northern run into the dry months from around May to September. One comfort note for the same window: in most vans the air conditioning runs off the engine, so it does nothing overnight, and a powered site is worth having in a Queensland January.

Why do some companies appear in the prices but not in the depot table, and vice versa?

Because we only publish depot details we could confirm on the company's own site. Apollo prices Brisbane pickups and appears in the comparison above, but its address, hours and transfer arrangements are not verified against apollocamper.com, so the row is left out rather than printed unchecked — take the collection address from your booking confirmation. Star RV's own Brisbane help page returned content identical to JUCY's, which looks like an error on their side rather than real data, so it is not listed either.
