The thing that catches people out here is not the fee, it is the length. Most operators impose a minimum hire on a one-way that is far longer than the drive: a two-day run between capitals can carry a week or ten-day floor, and the long crossings to Perth and Darwin run to a fortnight or more. Two different mechanisms are at work and they are worth telling apart. Britz, Maui, Apollo and Mighty share one set of Australian rental conditions in which the per-pair figure is a minimum charge — book a shorter trip and the shortfall appears as its own labelled line, so the hire is still possible. Cruisin Motorhomes publishes a hard minimum period instead, which simply cannot be booked under. Travellers Autobarn sets the widest range of all, running from ten days to thirty-five depending on the route.
One-way fees themselves follow no single convention. Some companies publish a banded schedule, some surface the charge only once you price a specific pair online, some treat a different drop-off as a request to be approved rather than a box to tick, and one or two advertise the leg as carrying no charge at all. Where a band does exist, it is set by the pair of cities rather than by the direction: the cheaper band applies only when a trip both starts and finishes among Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney, so any route touching Alice Springs, Broome, Darwin or Perth sits on the higher one whichever way round it is booked. Does every rental company allow a one-way drop-off?
No, and holding a depot at each end is not always enough. A one-way needs the company to serve both cities, which is why the route pages name the specific operators for each pairing rather than assuming the whole market covers everything. Beyond that, some companies exclude particular branches from one-way hire altogether — Star RV's own terms rule out Perth despite it running a Perth depot — and several treat any change of drop-off city as a request they can refuse rather than an option you select.
Why is the minimum hire so much longer on a one-way?
Because the company has to get the vehicle back, and a van left at the far end of the country is out of its home fleet for as long as that takes. The floors are set by route rather than by the driving time, so they can look wildly out of proportion to the trip: a corridor you could drive in two days may carry a ten-day minimum, and the Nullarbor and Stuart Highway crossings run to a fortnight. Check it before the fee, because it is far more likely to change your plans.
Is the one-way fee always shown before you book?
Not with every company.
