Spaceships: An Honest Review for Renters

Spaceships publishes three insurance tiers. The included Basic tier carries an A$5,000 bond and up to A$18,000 vehicle-damage liability; Partial reduces both to A$3,000 and A$9,000 for A$25 a day; Stress-Free removes the bond and the liability entirely for A$35 a day, both capped at 50 days.

Even Stress-Free, the top tier, excludes damage from renter negligence, including hitting a car park roof or low branch (named specifically, relevant to the model with a rooftop tent), plus water damage, driving under the influence, unsealed-road driving and any breach of the rental agreement's other terms.

Booking a different pickup and return depot at the time of reservation costs nothing, per Spaceships' own site. Changing the return location after booking is separately priced: a minimum A$150 up to A$500 if agreed in advance, and up to A$2 per kilometre if the change is not authorised.

Returning to Adelaide carries a flat A$200 remote-location fee regardless of pickup point (Hobart and Airlie Beach carry the same fee but sit outside this site's pricing). Cancellation is free until 22 days before pickup, then 20 per cent, 50 per cent or full forfeiture as the date approaches.

Every Spaceships model is contracted to sealed roads only. The terms list dirt, closed, restricted, beach and waterway routes as excluded from cover on every insurance tier, including the top one, so this is a company-wide policy rather than a per-model specification or an add-on option.

That rules out this site's 'Unsealed roads OK' badge across the entire fleet, which tracks the format: a people-mover conversion is built and insured for bitumen, not for the gravel, dirt and corrugated stretches a 4WD-style camper elsewhere on this site is rated to handle.

All four Australian models carry a 10-litre water tank for hand-washing and drinking only. None has a toilet, a shower or an onboard bathroom of any kind, so overnight stops depend entirely on where the vehicle is legally parked rather than on any feature the vehicle itself carries.

Australia has no national right to roam; where an overnight stop is legal is set state by state and council by council, and it varies street by street. Many coastal councils ban it outright and enforce it with fines. Plan on a booked site unless the specific council says otherwise.

Google reports a 4.6-to-4.9 band across all eight Australian depots rather than a single figure, and the source that read it did so deliberately: the individual listings were small enough to read but the aggregate was reported as a range instead.

What stands out is not the score itself but where it sits: a budget-priced operator's band overlaps the range the market's costlier brands hold, which is not the usual pattern for the cheapest end of a fleet, and it is worth weighing against the space complaints below, not in isolation.

Across seven Reddit threads, tied for the most discussed operator in the whole corpus, posters credit the car-like handling specifically on the Great Ocean Road and in city parking, and describe staff working patiently through insurance, liability and routing questions with first-time renters.

The same threads name the company's own trip-planning app, used for locating free campgrounds, day-use areas and drinking-water refills, and a canvas tent that pitches over the open tailgate, repeatedly credited with making a tropical Queensland trip workable. A recurring minor gripe is a water container handed over empty.

Most vendor pages on this site exist to reconcile platforms that disagree. Here they largely do not: the Reddit threads and the Google reviews independently name the same driving strength and the same space limitation, which is closer to a settled read than most comparisons on this site reach.

Trustpilot adds little to that picture; four reviews is too thin a sample to move it either way. Treat the driving praise and the no-toilet, no-standing-room complaint as the reliable part of this page, and treat the Trustpilot score as a data point rather than a corroborating vote.
