Gunn Point, on Gunn Point Road roughly an hour's drive northeast of Darwin and inside the Litchfield Municipality, is a free, no-permit vehicle-based camping area administered by the NT Land Corporation — camping is confined to the signed designated areas away from the beach and cliff edge, and there are no bins, toilets or drinking water, so it only works in a genuinely self-contained van. Litchfield National Park's own campgrounds, Wangi Falls included, are paid sites booked through the NT Parks system rather than a free fallback, and no legal Stuart or Arnhem Highway roadside rest area is confirmed from a government source, so none is named here. Anything else near the city is a caravan park.

Do I need a 4WD camper for Kakadu and Litchfield?

For Litchfield, no — the loop through Wangi Falls, Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole is sealed and a 2WD van does it comfortably. For Kakadu it depends what you want from it: the Arnhem Highway, Ubirr, Nourlangie and Yellow Water are all sealed, but the tracks to Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls and Gunlom are unsealed, restricted to four-wheel drive and shut through the wet. Only three companies stock four-wheel drives in this city and they are a small share of the row, so if those tracks are the point of the trip, book that vehicle first and fit the rest of the itinerary around it.

Where can I legally spend the first night out of Darwin?

Not on a street or in a car park in Darwin or Palmerston. Sleeping in a vehicle in a public place is a by-law offence in the City of Darwin, rangers patrol for it, fines are issued on the spot and unattended gear can be impounded. In practice the first night is a caravan park in or near the city, or a drive out: Gunn Point, about an hour northeast, is free and needs no permit, but camping is confined to the signed designated areas and there are no toilets, bins or drinking water, so it only works in a genuinely self-contained van. What does booking in the wet season actually look like here?

Thinner than most people expect. Britz, Maui, Apollo and Mighty close the Winnellie depot outright from 1 December to 31 March, Travellers Autobarn drops to weekday-only hours from 15 December to 15 March, and Campervan Village publishes no wet-season note at all. Those dates disagree with each other and we could not cross-check them for the current season, so anything from late November to early April is worth confirming with the operator before you book flights around it. The parks change too — unsealed tracks close, and the highways can flood at short notice.

Can I collect a van on a Sunday in Darwin?

At the Winnellie depot, yes in season: Britz, Maui, Apollo and Mighty publish daily hours from 1 April to 30 November, closing at 3:30pm with vehicles collected at least an hour before that. Travellers Autobarn and Campervan Village are both closed on Sundays, and Travellers Autobarn is closed on public holidays as well, with Saturday finishing at 1pm and 11am respectively. If your flight lands on a Sunday, the practical answer is either the Winnellie site or a night in the city first.

Is Darwin to Alice Springs realistic on a short trip?

Only if you genuinely enjoy driving. It is roughly 1,500km of Stuart Highway with Katherine, Mataranka, Tennant Creek and the Devils Marbles as the reasons to stop, and seven to ten days is the honest range because three of those days are simply the road. Squeeze it into less and most of the trip is a windscreen. With under a week, Katherine and Mataranka give you most of the landscape change and let you bring the van back to the depot you collected it from.
