Both sit at the budget end of this market, both include unlimited kilometres from depots in Auckland and Christchurch, and both run automatics, though Spaceships’ VW Cosmo can also be booked as a manual. In each fleet some models are not listed as self-contained under the green-warrant rules: JUCY names the Crib and the Cloudbreak, and Spaceships the Beta and the Dream Sleeper Mini, while its Beta 2S, Sigma and Cosmo are listed as green-warrant certified. The overlap stops at the ceiling. Four Spaceships models sleep two and the Cosmo sleeps three, so for four people or more there is no decision here to weigh.

What separates them is reach and what the vehicle contains. JUCY adds Queenstown, which turns an Auckland-to-Queenstown finish into an ordinary booking, though every one-way needs JUCY’s approval and the fee varies by vehicle and direction. Spaceships advertises no charge for moving a van between its two depots, but they sit on different islands and the Cook Strait vehicle fare is yours. Inside the van the gap is wider still: JUCY’s Chaser and Sundaze publish 1.92 metres of standing height with a fixed toilet and shower, while the only Spaceships van you can stand in is the Cosmo, with its pop-top raised, and no Spaceships model lists a shower.

The handover and the aftercare separate them again. JUCY’s three depots open 9am to 4pm seven days and hold campervan collection and return inside that window, with a NZ$200 fee for going outside it; Spaceships runs a 24-hour automated pickup, and Christchurch is fully self-service. JUCY also carries the widest platform gap in this market: 3.9 on Google across its three depots against 2.2 on a shared Australian and New Zealand Trustpilot listing. Spaceships is the only company here where both platforms land on the same number, 4.5 either way, and its recurring complaint is an automated first reply rather than the van. Google is written at the counter and Trustpilot after the final invoice, so read JUCY’s two scores as two different moments rather than as a contradiction.
