JUCY vs Wilderness Motorhomes

Both fleets run seven models and both collect from Auckland and Christchurch, and that is where the overlap ends. JUCY also holds a Queenstown depot, which is the one itinerary question Wilderness cannot answer — a one-way finishing at Queenstown airport is an ordinary JUCY booking and is not one Wilderness can take. Wilderness runs Fiat Ducato motorhomes with standing headroom and a fixed bathroom throughout, while JUCY’s range starts at a two-berth Toyota Estima with 1.2 metres of interior height and a portable butane stove.

The split that decides more of the trip is legal rather than physical. Since 7 June 2026 only a green warrant counts as certified self-containment in New Zealand, and it requires a permanently fixed toilet. JUCY lists five of its seven campervans as self-contained and names the Crib and the Cloudbreak as not, on its booking filter and in its freedom-camping guide alike. Wilderness says in its FAQ that its motorhomes are certified self-contained, and every model page lists a cassette flush toilet, though the model pages themselves do not mention certification. Roads run the other way: JUCY prohibits unsealed roads outright and voids every excess option if you drive one, whereas Wilderness publishes no road blacklist and bars beaches, water crossings and anything signposted as unsuitable instead. Neither company’s vehicles are cleared for the roads that are genuinely restricted here, so get a specific gravel route confirmed in writing rather than inferred.

Heating divides them the same way. Six of JUCY’s seven list heating as drivers-cabin only, which is the dashboard heater and works while the engine runs, and only the six-berth Big Kahuna heats the living space — JUCY qualifies even that as needing a powered site. Wilderness fits central heating and a fixed bathroom to all seven models on its published specifications. Vehicle age tracks the same line: an ageing, high-mileage fleet is the most consistent complaint in JUCY’s Google reviews, raised independently at all three depots, while Wilderness renters on both platforms describe near-new vehicles. What you gain in bad weather is also what you have to park, and the smallest Wilderness model is 6.0 metres. That gap reads as comfort on a North Island loop in January and as the whole trip on the South Island in May or September. The two uncertified JUCY models also commit you to a holiday park every night, so weigh these two as a total trip cost rather than as a daily rate.
