JUCY vs Wendekreisen

Both companies collect at Auckland and Christchurch, both top out at six berths, and both hide meaningful differences behind sub-brand names: JUCY publishes two pairs of JUCY- and Chill’d-badged campers as identical on every spec it lists, and Wendekreisen spreads 11 categories across Budget, Koru and Koru Star. The depot that separates them is Queenstown, which JUCY runs and Wendekreisen reaches only by prior arrangement and a NZ$550 relocation surcharge.

The real difference is what the cheapest vehicle in each fleet gives you. JUCY lists five of its seven campervans as self-contained on its own booking filter, and the Crib and the Cloudbreak are not: no toilet, no standing headroom, a portable butane stove. Six of the seven heat the driver’s cabin only, which is the dashboard heater, and only the six-berth Big Kahuna heats the living space — JUCY qualifies even that as needing a powered site. Wendekreisen publishes all 11 of its categories as certified self-contained with a shower, a fixed toilet, hot water and a heater, LPG on the Budget models and diesel on the Koru range. What that consistency costs is the gearbox: the Budget and lower Koru tiers are manual on older LDV V80 bases, while every JUCY camper is automatic.

Two consequences follow for your route. JUCY’s contract prohibits driving on any unsealed road and voids every excess option if you do, at NZ$250 per violation, while Wendekreisen works from a named blacklist instead: Ninety Mile Beach, Skippers Road, Tasman Valley Road where unsealed and Mount Aspiring Road beyond Treble Cone are barred, and every other public road is permitted, though liability on a listed route carries no monetary limit. The second consequence is where you sleep. Since 7 June 2026 only a green warrant certifies a vehicle for freedom camping in New Zealand, so on JUCY’s two uncertified models every night is a holiday park or a DOC campsite that accepts them. Over ten nights those fees are the larger number — compare these two on total trip cost rather than on a daily rate.
