Star RV vs Cruisin Motorhomes

Neither of these is a van conversion. Star RV runs three Polaris models — a two-berth on a Fiat Ducato base, a four- and a six-berth on Mercedes-Benz Sprinters — and every one is fully self-contained, with a fixed indoor toilet and shower, a 90 L fresh-water tank, a two-burner gas cooktop, a microwave and a 90 L fridge. Cruisin runs eight models between two and six berths, and seven of the eight carry an onboard shower and cassette toilet with hot and cold water; only the 2 Berth Hi Top goes without. Both fleets are automatic and diesel throughout, both include linen, pillows and towels on every hire, and both are confined to sealed roads with no four-wheel drive anywhere in the range — Cruisin allows a well-maintained access road of under twelve kilometres to a recognised campground, and none of the Polaris models is cleared for unsealed roads at all. The five cities this site prices are the same five for both: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns and Perth. Star RV adds Adelaide, for six depots and no Darwin. Cruisin’s sixth is Hobart, its home city and head office, which it serves and this site does not yet price.

What decides most bookings here is the calendar rather than the vehicle. Cruisin’s shortest hire is five days everywhere except Perth, which takes seven; between 26 December and 6 January the floor is ten days at every branch, and event weeks such as the Bathurst 1000, the Melbourne MotoGP and the Gympie Muster take ten as well. Days are billed per calendar day, so the pickup day and the return day both count. A one-way adds a A$165 fee and a route minimum of ten to twenty-one days — fourteen on most routes touching Cairns or Hobart, twenty-one for anything involving Perth. Every mainland branch runs 08:00 to 16:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays and closes on Sundays, there is no after-hours pickup, and an unauthorised late return costs A$150 a day on top of the rate. Star RV’s pickups run on JUCY’s depot network and opening hours, which vary by location and season and may attract an after-hours surcharge; neither a minimum hire nor a one-way route minimum appears in the Star RV record. A four-day trip, a Sunday start, or a one-way to Perth booked for a fortnight is not a Cruisin booking at all.

Over a whole trip the two diverge on what is documented and what is charged. Cruisin publishes a fleet-age ceiling on its own vehicle pages — nothing over four years, and under two on the 4 and 6 Berth Deluxe — while Star RV publishes no equivalent figure and rests its case on equipment fitted as standard, with no budget tier and no way to trade down inside the range. Heating is a qualified yes on both: Star RV lists living-area heating as an optional addon rather than part of the base rental, and Cruisin’s heating unit runs on 240 V only, warming nothing away from a powered site, with a plug-in fan heater at A$15 per hire. Cruisin’s bond is a charge rather than a hold — A$5,000 debited to a physical credit card at pickup, with a 2.15 per cent surcharge on Visa or 2.18 on Mastercard and refunds taking up to 14 working days. A$45 a day removes the bond and the liability, A$55 a day adds windscreen, tyre, rollover, overhead and underbody cover, and awning, water and salt damage sit outside every tier. The cancellation ladders then almost match: free at 31 days or more for Star RV against 29 for Cruisin, then 20 per cent against 25.
